World Food Day, October 16, commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It is a day in which food ministries and organizations all over the world are celebrated for their ongoing efforts in ending hunger around the world.

Providing food to our community is an important outreach ministry for St. Mark’s. This year, we will be taking part in World Food Day by collecting much needed food pantry items: 16oz. peanut butter, jelly, soup, and boxes of cereal. St. Mark’s food pantry provides groceries (enough for 3 days) to anyone in the Huntsville area who calls asking for assistance. We encourage you to join us for worship on Sunday, October 16 in celebration and to bring any donations with you for blessing and prayers.

If you would like to take part in any wider ELCA festivities, ELCA World Hunger invites you to join their online event, hosted by Rick Steves where he will talk with guests (including the Rev. Anne Burghardt, general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation; Mark Jansen, CEO of Blue Diamond Almonds; Dr. Suon Sopheap, executive director of Life With Dignity) and visit an ELCA World Hunger grant recipient in the Southwestern Washington Synod. Learn something new about the complex food crisis our world faces, and see your generosity in action, funding creative and sustainable solutions. Tune in live on the ELCA’s Facebook and YouTube pages at 4pm Central time to watch this event.
