Growing Together
Mission & Vision
St. Mark’s is growing together in faith to abundantly nourish our community, so that led by the Holy Spirit, all would experience God’s grace, welcome and peace in the name of Christ.
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church is a medium-sized Lutheran congregation located in downtown Huntsville, Alabama. We have a big heart for nourishing others through prayer, worship, service and lifelong learning.
Our story started over seventy years ago when St. Mark’s was founded by people seeking to find a spiritual and communal home in Huntsville. Many of our charter members were German immigrants who served alongside Wernher von Braun as rocket and missile scientists at Redstone Arsenal. Through the years our church community has been writing its story alongside the growing city of Huntsville and greater Madison County.
Today, we’re a home for all, and we’re writing new chapters of our story by welcoming all people to God’s church. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church is a member of the ELCA of the Southeastern Synod. Theologically this means we believe God’s grace through Jesus Christ is a gift for you and for the world, no exception. In response to this gift, we fully embrace the call to boldly serve and love everyone as Jesus did. We strive to follow the Holy Spirit by welcoming people of all ethnicities, cultures, backgrounds, and orientations to St. Mark’s.

Shalom is the Hebrew word for God’s peace. It is a peace that isn’t simply the absence of conflict, but instead it is God’s deep love for all of creation and life. As Christians when we respond and participate in God’s grace, we are taking part in God’s Shalom.
Therefore the Shalom Team at St. Mark’s seeks to guide and accompany our congregation so that it might embody God’s Shalom.
Since 2021 the Shalom Team has been implementing a collaborative and comprehensive approach to help St. Mark’s live into its shared mission and vision of bringing about God’s grace, welcome, and peace for all people.
The Shalom Team remains committed to growing deep authentic relationships between members and participating in diversity, inclusion, and justice throughout congregational life.
What are the objectives of the Shalom Team?
